You may be thinking that, as an adult, you’ve got this coloring stuff down. Surprisingly, after 20, 30, or maybe even 50+ years of not coloring(GASP), it may not be as easy as you think to pick back up. Here are some grownup tips for coloring, so you’ll get the most enjoyment out of your new coloring pages.
Choose a style to suit your mood
Adult coloring books come in a wide variety of designs, so you should be able to find something to suit your mood and tastes. Intricate patterns with lots of detail can be great for relaxing after a hard day at work, while cityscapes or landscapes can offer you a chance to express your creativity and create something more closely resembling a piece of art.
Choose your tools
Most adults agree that when it comes to coloring, crayons just don’t cut it. For more detail and shading, look for colored pencils or art pencils. For bolder colors, try fine-tipped markers designed for art. Of course, you can also use crayons, but they may be too wide for the tiny spaces on most adult coloring sheets.
Colored pencils have the added benefit of being erasable, so if you make a mistake, you can simply erase it and correct it. Whatever you choose, try to remember that mistakes happen, and coloring is meant to be relaxing, not a stressful exercise in perfection.
I love coloring with pens the best. I love the bright colors that are in your face. Which is why printing off my own pages is ideal…make a mistake…print out a new page. Bam, problem solved with no loss of an expensive page from a book I purchased in a store.
Set the mood
To get the full relaxing effect from coloring, try settling in for a coloring session with some relaxing music and a glass of wine.. Light the candles throughout the house. Create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, and let your creative juices flow. You’ll soon be surprised at how much fun you’re having and see just how great coloring can be for stress relief.
Make it a regular habit
Coloring helps relax you and unlock your creativity. Find just a few minutes every day to color in a small section of your coloring sheet, and you’ll see the benefits throughout the day as you are less stressed. You may even find that coloring helps you learn to be more creative in other aspects of your life, so have fun with it and see for yourself what happens.
Many of us suffer from sleep issues. Number one thing you are supposed to do with sleep issues is turn off all electronics 1-2 hours before bed. Creating the habit of turning it all off and grabbing your coloring pages helps in that better sleep habit.
